DUTIES:
This PA will work in the Mental Hygiene Clinic providing medication management including the use of neuroleptic injections and other psychotropic medications to approximately 10-12 Veterans per day. The PA will provide and coordinate comprehensive outpatient care for assigned patients, or patients with acute and chronic problems; screening outpatients to determine need for further care; order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and vaccines; carrying out health promotion and disease prevention activities including education and shared decision-making; initiating and expediting requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies; document progress notes in the patientÂ's medical record using applicable CPT codes; obtaining consent and documenting procedures performed for which the PA is responsible; provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care and use of prescribed treatments and drugs; writing prescriptions for schedule 3 - 5 drugs using the facility DEA.

EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
(1) A bachelorÂ's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or
(2) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelorÂ's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or
(3) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
Certification:
As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.

This position will be filled on a full-time permanent basis. Upon completing any required probationary period, the position will be permanent.
This position is in the Excepted Service and does not confer competitive status.
Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
