Prepares a full range of trays and instrument sets used in all the Surgical Procedures which include Open Heart, Orthopedic, Eye, GU, Neuro, Vascular, etc! . Uses care in assembling instrument sets to protect points, cutting edges, and delicate instruments. Instruments are arranged to ensure the proper penetration by the preferred sterilizing medium. Removes sterilized instrument sets and equipment from the sterilizer cart inspecting for indications of improper sterilization. Ensures instrument sets and packages are properly labeled to show expiration date and load number of sterilized items, storing the items in such a way as to preserve the sterilized items in accordance with the VA Directive 7176 and SPD handbook. Receives periodic training in the Preparation Area, as to the use and functions of new surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment, and any new developments in microbiology, bacteriology, and therapeutic practices, as they affect the clean/sterile supply operation. Skill in set and reset of Steam and ETO Sterilizer; washer sterilizer and other electronic equipment within the department. Performs daily and period! ic test to ensure equipment is functioning properly. Interpret! s the test results and know what actions to take in cases where the results are unacceptable. Receives, disassembles, and inspects for damage and serviceability any reusable medical supplies, instruments, and equipment. Determines correct method of cleaning, decontaminating, and pre-sterilizing surgical and medical instruments used throughout the health care system. Arranges instruments in trays in the correct manner, e.g., hinged and ringed-instruments in open position, heavy instruments on the bottom, delicate items on top.

Qualifications & Evaluations

Qualification Requirements: OPM's Group Coverage Qualification Standards for Technical and Medical Support Positions and Individual Occupational Requirements for Medical Supply Aide and Technician Series, 0622. One year specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-5.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, such as: Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipme! nt. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, genera! l uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker.

Time in Grade Requirements : Time in grade is the 52-week requirement that Federal employees in competitive service General Schedule (GS) positions at GS-5 and above must serve before they are eligible for promotion (advancement) to the next grade level as appropriate for the position being filled.
