The Ultrasound (US) Technologist is responsible for providing a variety of cross-sectional technical, diagnostic and interventional images at a technical level that does not require constant su! pervision. They perform routine US procedures including abdominal, obstetric, gynecological, neuro, and vascular. They operate US equipment to produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes under the direction of a radiologist or other physician and assist them in the performance of procedures. Positions patient on examining table and adjusts immobilization devices to obtain optimum views of specified area of body requested.

Explains procedures to patients in order to reduce anxiety and obtain patient cooperation. Moves patient into position for imaging and adjusts equipment controls to optimize visualization. Practices, reviews and evaluates images to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. Major Duties: Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital’s strategic goals.

Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality ! improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively pa! rticipates in improvement initiatives. Performs routine assessments to ensure equipment is well maintained, operating in a safe work environment. Provides appropriate clinical information about the patient to the radiologist. Ensures that studies are being sent upon completion from modalities to the archive and to reading stations.

Updates the Imaging Supervisor of any abnormal occurrences with patient’s procedures, scheduling, preparation, transport, and transfer onto exam table and submits occurrences in Quantros when required. Is proactive to coordinates activities that require effort between nursing, imaging staff, physicians and/or radiologists. Communicates effectively with team members, physicians, and other healthcare providers. Ensures that information is disseminated and effectively communicated using business appropriate communication and following chain of command.

Utilizes patient transfer devices for patient transfer form bed to stretcher, ! stretcher to exam table, etc. for patient and staff safety. Has working knowledge of tubing, IV’s, catheters in order appropriately mange patient and procedure in a safe manner. Works with SMH customers to provide access to images.

Maintains up-to-date working knowledge of all US systems. Cooperatively educates and trains new staff technologists and/or student technologists. Effectively utilizes multiple computer-based technologies for order entry, document storage, charge entry, image storage, etc. Produces high quality US procedures adhering to established procedure protocols and/or physician instructions.

Selects transducer and adjusts equipment controls according to organ to be examined, depth of field, and other specifications of test. Safely operates equipment. Utilizes ultrasound soaking station for probe cleansing in accordance with department standards. Maintains quality control logs for ductless fume hood (GUS) in accordance with department sta! ndards.

Properly screens patients for appropriate clinical inf! ormation, completes pre-procedural questionnaire (history), consents and provides post-procedural education (discharge instructions). Familiar with and properly utilizes protocols for National Patient Safety Goals and upholds those goals. (Patient identification, correct procedure/correct patient, site marking, timeout, etc.) Provides information to patient & family regarding ultrasound procedures. Completes examination and documentation specific to that exam in a timely manner (Critiques images, marks exam as reviewed, performs other processing).

Maintains inventory of supplies and stocks area with appropriate supplies. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization. Assists physicians with image guidance of biopsy (Core, FNA and Stereotactic), abscess drainage, paracentesis, and thoracentesis procedures. Provides general nursing care to patients so that basic medical and comfort needs are satisfied.

Able to p! erform portable scans and function proficiently in a variety of environments including but not limited to the Emergency Room, Operating Room, Nursery, Labor &Delivery and all Intensive Care Units. Performs ultrasound imaging following appropriate precautions and techniques according to isolation type. Demonstrates competency to perform neuro imaging of neonates. Demonstrates competency to perform pre-surgical vein mapping.

Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Required: Demonstrates skills sufficient to successfully function within the position as an ultrasound technologist and can utilize multiple computer-based software applications including but not limited to McKesson PACS, Paragon Radiology Information System, Quantros, Paragon Orders Management and McKesson Materials Management. Graduate of accredited school and registered or is registry eligible by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasonographers (ARDMS). Certified in CPR (Healthcare Prov! ider). Clinical experience or training.

2-5 years previous exp! erience in Ultrasound imaging. Previous experience or demonstrated competency with all aspects of major duties. Licensure/Certification: Required: ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST I â€" American Registry Diagnostic Medical Ultrasonographers (ARDMS) or registry eligible. CPR (Healthcare Provider) ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST II â€" American Registry Diagnostic Medical Ultrasonographers (ARDMS) or registry eligible with Vascular certification.

CPR (Healthcare Provider) ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST III â€" American Registry Diagnostic Medical Ultrasonographers (ARDMS) or registry eligible. CPR (Healthcare Provider) with Vascular certification plus 3 other ARDMS certifications (OB-GYN, Abdomen, Neuro, Breast, or Fetal).
