Ensures initial donor suitability and eligibility, product integrity, and the continued health of donors. Reviews donor medical histories. As needed, screens donors, take medical histories and vital signs, and conducts HCT, protein, and other tests. Determines initial suitability of donor to undergo plasmapheresis through verification of accumulated data and physical examination. Handles moderate cases and reviews complex cases with higher-level Physician Substitute or Medical Director. Performs any needed injury, illness, or medication evaluations to ensure continued donor suitability. Ensures all donor medical information is complete and accurate prior to donation. Updates permanent donor files after screenings. Completes, reviews, and authorizes medical incident reports. Provides appropriate medical care to donors during plasmapheresis process if complications arise; contacts all necessary parties. Assists with management and administration of Hepatitis Vaccine program. May direct and/or administer a hyperimmune program (if applicable). Responsible for donor awareness to potential hazards and administration of donor consent form. Assists with management and administration of employee counseling, testing, and follow-up of employee exposures to plasma or blood. Reviews all normal and abnormal test results and donor files in order to determine continued donor eligibility. Proves appropriate and confidential counseling to ineligible donor candidates. Builds rapport with donors to ensure overall customer satisfaction with the center to support long-term donation. Learns and maintains thorough familiarity and compliance with all state and federal regulations, FDA-approved Standard Operating Procedure Manual, OSHA, CLIA, cGMP, and internal company procedures. Maintains supplies necessary to perform job duties. Maintains and ensures proper sanitation and cleaning of equipment and work areas between donors. Ensures donor and staff confidentiality. Ensures own competence to perform other center technical roles to ensure efficient center operations. Maintains familiarity with new products, technologies, and/or methods and conducts periodic staff meetings to review. Reports all unsafe situations or conditions to a center manager or Medical Director. Performs other duties as required.
- Not responsible for directly supervising or managing other employees.
- May give general guidance to Donor Processors and Phlebotomists.
Education and Certification:
Educated and currently certified/licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician (2-intermediate or 3-advanced/paramedic), Licensed Practical Nurse, or Registered Nurse. Current CPR certification. Becomes TPR-certified as a Physician Substitute and Donor Processor within 2 months of employment. Works toward TPR Phlebotomy certification.
Experience:
Experience providing medical care and assessing patients preferred. Plasma or whole blood experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Good assessment skills with ability to handle moderate cases. Good caregiver, diagnostic, and customer service skills. Proficient in English. Where applicable, bi-lingual skills. Ability to understand and follow SOPâs and protocols.
Position Attributes
Work is performed in a plasma center. Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. Exposure to electrical office and laboratory equipment. Exposure to extreme cold below 32*. Personal protective equipment required such as protective eyewear, garments and gloves. Work is performed sitting, standing and twisting neck for 2-4 hours per day. Repetitive hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists. Ability to make precise coordinated movements, of the fingers to grasp and manipulate objects. Repetitive foot movement; may squat, crouch or sit on one's heels. Occasionally walks, bends and twist waist. Light lifting of 15lbs. with a maximum lift of 50lbs. May reach below shoulder height. Hearing acuity essential. Color perception/discrimination, near vision and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/30 and to 20/100 in the other eye. Able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Works independently with little guidance or reliance on oral or written instructions. Performs a wide range of tasks as dictated by variable demands and changing conditions. Relates sensitive information to diverse groups.
