The OR Surgical Assistant effectively maintains by supporting the nursing staff Standards of Practice and Care, performing direct and indirect care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The OR S! urgical Assistant promotes collaboration with physicians and other disciplines. Major Duties: Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital’s strategic goals. Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Assists in the orientation and training of new and tenured personnel and serves as a preceptor when requested. Accepts delegated responsibilities. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. Assist in the transfer and positioning of surgical patients. Assist in the restocking of surgical suites as requested. Assists with prepping the patient under the direct supervision of the RN. Maintains placement of surgical equipment in the assigned spaces. Works with Environmental services to facilitate the exchange of contaminated supplies. Actively participates i! n the daily morning report in OR and mandatory monthly meeting! s. Adheres to established hospital sanitation procedures for between and after completion of surgical cases per standard protocol. Maintains a clean and safe environment in patient care areas, as well as in all of the department. Responsible for the safe transport of the surgical patient from the floor/unit to the Surgical Suite. Disposes of trash and linen, exercising universal precautions. Obtains linens as appropriate. Properly identifies patients prior to transport following established hospital guidelines providing for patient comfort and privacy at all times. Collects and delivers specimens to the appropriate areas.
Blood and blood products are obtained and delivered to appropriate areas. Adheres to correct sanitation procedures for cleaning operating rooms. Keeps siderails up at all times for patient safety. Provides for patient comfort and privacy at all times. Available to take call with appropriate response time of (30 minutes). Assist in the transfer and posi! tioning of surgical patients. Maintains and cleans supplies and equipment in the Operating Room, gathers equipment, pillows, and other equipment necessary for performance of surgical procedures as directed by O.R. Team Leader/Facilitator. Assist patients to and from bathroom in OR holding area. Measures/empties GU bags and reports to RN patient output. Assist the circulating RN with patient care as directed. Responds to internal/external disasters as directed. Transports non-narcotic medications from the Pharmacy Department to the Operating Room, returns non-narcotic medications to the Pharmacy Department from the Operating Room for credit and transports non-narcotic medications with patients from in-hospital and out-patient units/departments to the Operating Room. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization. Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Preferred: 1 year experience in clinical setting is preferred. Required: Profici! ency in skills as indicated on skills checklist prior to end of 90 day ! probationary period. BLS CPR certification. High school diploma or equivalent.
