Job Summary/Responsibilities:
The Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a research facility of the Louisiana State University System, is seeking a qualified person for Safety Officer. This position is responsible for guidance, administrative support and the proper management of the safe and secure handling, storage and use of chemicals, biological agents and toxins, as well as PBRC's biological, radioactive and chemical waste. Provides technical expertise and evaluations on personnel safety issues, including biological safety for high hazard/risk labs, employee incident investigations, laboratory and facility safety inspections, and personnel training. This person is responsible for coordinating compliance with the occupational health and safety regulations relating ! to biological research and clinical practice (includes clinica! l laboratories and medical/nursing/ancillary staff), including fire safety; assisting in the development and monitoring of security plans for the individual laboratory units; being a liaison with other safety and environmental units of LSU, including the LSU Environmental Health and Safety, Radiation Safety Office, and the Inter-institutional Biological and Recombinant DNA Safety Committee. Position reports to the Director of Basic Science and works in conjunction with other staff in providing a comprehensive program, and assists in other roles as assigned. The following job duties are all essential functions of the job: Laboratory Consultation, Inspection, and Training?Advises and trains all levels of laboratory personnel in biological safety, chemical hazards, occupational health topics, infection control, emergency response, and the federal and state regulations which set forth safety and security requirements for their activities. Provide research protocol reviews invol! ving recombinant DNA and infectious agents/ toxins, and comprehensive safety and security inspections for laboratories involved in research. Regulatory Compliance?Researches, monitors, and develops manuals and policies for regulatory compliance; Provides guidance to others on interpretation of regulatory issues;. Represents Pennington as liaison with regulators and governmental bodies as needed in the safety, biosafety and environmental program. Training Development-Works alone or with others, to develop the training programs necessary to satisfy requirements in the safety and environmental program. Present during new employee orientation. Record keeping-Maintains detailed and adequate records to satisfy program requirements and government regulations, especially those governing select agent / toxin research; prepares local, state, and federal reports as needed, including water quality reports.The incumbent will be the committee chair and coordinator for the committees at P! ennington Biomedical Research Center relating to safety, biosafety, inf! ection control and regulatory compliance. Accident Trends and Analyses?Assists in the investigation and analysis of the causes of accidents, provides recommendations to help prevent recurrence. Crisis Communication-Incumbent will work with the Crisis Communication Team, and other administrative personnel during an emergency that could impact the operations of the Center, including organizing an annual crisis drill for the Crisis Team and all employees, assisting in the update of the crisis website and emergency telephone message during an event, and ensuring the Crisis Team contact information is accurate and up-to-date. Occupational Health and Safety Program?Administer,maintain records, and monitor compliance with the program of occupational health and safety for personnel who use laboratory animals in their research program. Committees: Chair of the PBRC IBC, and the Safety Committee. Member of the following committees: IBRDSC, Crisis Communication, Institutional Animal C! are and Use Committee, and Quality Improvement.

Required Qualifications:
A BS degree in biological science, safety, or a related technical or academic field is necessary, plus two or more years experience in safety, health and environmental administration relating to biological or medical research. This position involves interaction with all levels of research and staff personnel, and requires very good written and oral communication, interpersonal and presentation skills. Familiarity with laboratory safety, health and environmental practices is required. Academic experience is preferred, but not necessary. Computer skills are required, with experience and knowledge in word processing programs, computer graphics, presentation and spreadsheet applications. Familiarity with state and federal regulations relating to safety, health, and environmental programs is required. This position requires a valid, class E driver's license.

Desired Qualifications:
An advanced degree in a! medical / biological research technical field and professional certification in safety, or equivalent is desired. Excellent communication, organizational, and personnel management/ interactive skills are desirable. CHMM Certification (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager).
